For over the years, there has been debate about whether Wrestling especially WWE is fake or Real.
Before we provide an answer to this question, let’s make some points clear about Wrestling and which you can use to determine whether Wrestling is real or Fake yourself.
Most times, it is been compared to other combat sports such as boxing, kick boxing, KFC, etc. Wheras they all have rules guiding them, same as Wrestling.
Different Type of Wrestling
There are just two (2) types:
1. Sports Wrestling
This is not owned by one or few persons. It is never a company, as it is similar to boxing, kick-boxing, taekwondo, etc because participants or fighters do not belong to a one man or cooperate business owners.
Participants or fighters always represent themselves, company or country and it is mostly done during Olympics and other sporting events. Fighters aren’t exposed to weapons, only physical battle.
Sports Wrestling Key Rules
- Pin: The most common way to win, is by holding both of your opponent’s shoulders on the mat for a specified time (usually two seconds).
- Scoring: Points are awarded for takedowns, escapes, reversals, and near falls.
- Takedown: Successfully bringing your opponent to the mat and gaining control.
- Escape: Getting away from your opponent’s control when on the mat.
- Reversal: Going from a defensive position on the mat to an offensive position.
- Near Fall (Back Points): When a wrestler nearly pins their opponent, scoring 2 or 3 points depending on the duration and position.
- Illegal Holds: Striking, choking, headbutting, biting, hair pulling, and certain dangerous holds are prohibited.
- Passive Wrestling: In some styles, wrestlers who are overly defensive may be penalized with a shot clock.
- Technical Violations: These include improper equipment, fleeing the mat, unsportsmanlike conduct, and unnecessary roughness.
2. Sports Entertainment
This is where wrestling companies such as WWE, All Elite Wrestling, Major League Wrestling, etc fall into. Participants and fighters must be duly signed into the company for them to participate. They use weapons specially made by the company to hit themselves, according to match rules.
Most of the weapons use are copies of things we see in our everyday lives but lighter and specially made not to kill themselves with but to inflict pains.
Sports Entertainment wrestling is not a war ground where opponents will intend to kill themselves but to inflict pains so they make weapons for that as well.
Sports Entertainment Rules
Every wrestling match has its own rules but the common ones are listed below:
- Pinfall: holding your opponent on the ground with backs on the ring floor while the official makes 3 count.
- Submission: Holding your opponent down until they pass-out or tap out.
Unlike normal wrestling where roughness is not allowed, but in sports Entertainment wrestling roughness that doesn’t exceed the rule of the match are allowed.
Is Sports Entertainment Wrestling Real or Fake?
Sports Entertainment wrestling, whether WWE, AEW, etc are REAL not fake, see reasons for our claim below.
- Participants are properly trained for their signature move. Whether self-development or company development. The company train you according to their rules.
- Remember when we said WWE is not a death sentence that their weapons are specially made to inflict pains and not to kill. This is why they always tell you not to try it at home.
- If WWE should be a death sentence, guns and knife will be introduced and it will no longer be a sports Entertainment platform.
Including boxing, Taekwondo, UFC, etc are guided by rules, including different ways of claiming victory.
Difference between WWE & UFC
- In UFC there’s no pinfall rule
- UFC has juat one core rule similar to WWE which is Submission Rule.
- In UFC fight, you can win an opponent by just dominating them on the floor, but in WWE dominating your opponent on the floor doesn’t count, the only thing that counts is the Pinfall, submission, according to the rule of the match as every match has its own rule.
- UFC have just one match pattern while in WWE matches are diverse as well as the rules.
Reasons why Wrestling is Real
if you are claiming that wrestling is fake because they do not murder themselves in the ring, then you must be out of your mind because there’s no sports or sports Entertainment platform that can accommodate that.
- Government Regulations: WWE for example is a company owned by one or more persons. It can be sold or bought. They are registered and regulated by the government also. So it is not a military affair that permit murder
- Match Fixing: Matches are fixed as well as other sporting platforms including, football, basketball, boxing, etc.
- Training: Wrestlers Train to get themselves fit and stand by the rules of the game. Samething with boxing, football and every other sports train before they compete they must train according to how they intend to defeat their opponents.
- Match winning is a priority for every wrestler to keep themselves relevant, as well winning Belt is crucial for every fighter because of the money involved. Just the way winning of matches and trophies are top priority of every football club to keep themselves relevant.
- The Entertainment aspect of Wrestling is a character based performance by the wrestlers to keep audience entertained doesn’t make it fake as well. Remember it is Sports Entertainment, I can decide to challenge a wrestler to a fight violently or playfully depending on my mood at that given time. It is not influenced by the company, this is were some enthusiast claim the sports is been scripted, whereas it is a wrong ideology.
- Prizes of Belt: Wrestling cannot be fake because of the price tag on every championship (belt) or contract won. We cannot act for you to win and I lose because of benefits attached to every championship won.
- Match Win bonus: No wrestling match is pre-planned for any competitor to win because of the match win bonus. You boost your relevance in the business by winning matches. Though wrestlers such as R-Truth, Miz, etc are just in for the fun and Fame not entirely for the money, thats why they hardly get a match fixture unless coincidence.
- Entertainmnet in Sports: Sometimes when some wrestling match are extremely entertaining some capitalise on it and claim its acted or scripted. Now my question is If a paticular football, basketball or boxing match happens to be so entertaining, does that make it fake?
- Match Winning: Some sports Enthusiasts wants to determine a wrestling match winning by size of the Athlete. The truth is size doesn’t matter in fighting, but to an extent. What matters most times is the level of your calculation and precision. Both big and small are trained athletes, so size should not really matter. Even in football a club with less value can beat up a club of times 5 of the total value.
Why do people think wrestling is fake
- Coincidence: this happens in every other sports events, including our individual daily lives. Because of some match coincidence, critics capitalise on that to flaw the entire platform.
- Media Influence: Remember WWE and other sports Entertainment platforms are owned as a company with share holders. There are some influential people with desire to discredit the entire platform because they weren’t given the opportunity to buy a share. So they pay heavily to media houses so they can post this propaganda.
- Sentiments: There are people with personal Sentiments against the entire platform because they don’t like Wrestling. They go on forums (Quora, Naira land, etc) and social media platforms just to degrade the platform because they don’t like it.
N/B: Everyone is entitled to their opinions, I can as well say Football is fake because of the following reasons:
- Due to multiple report on match Fixing: Match-fixing means acting to come up with a preplanned result is scripting.
- players acting up when they weren’t fowled
- players missing clear chances that would’ve been a goal.
