Nigeria eyeing a spot on the Formula 1 Grand pix

Nigeria is officially eyeing a spot on the Formula 1 calendar!

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed the nation’s interest in hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix, with NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko leading the charge. He’s named Opus Racing Promotions as Nigeria’s official representative for the bid, specifically targeting Abuja as the potential host city.

To advance the ambitious plan, Dikko has extended personal invitations to key figures in the F1 world: CEO Stefano Domenicali, legendary seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, and the esteemed Tilke Engineers & Architects, who design some of the world’s most iconic race tracks. The goal is for them to engage directly with the government and private sector stakeholders.

What impact will this event bring to Nigeria?

According to Dikko, a Grand Prix would be more than just a race; it would “not only boost national pride but also strengthen our infrastructure, attract private investment, and create economic opportunities and jobs, firmly positioning sports as a vital pillar of Nigeria’s GDP growth and unity.”

Should Shouls the west african’s bid succeed, it would mark a historic return for Africa to the F1 circuit, as the continent hasn’t hosted a Grand Prix since South Africa in 1993. Interestingly, both South Africa and Rwanda are also reportedly in discussions to host F1 events, indicating growing African interest in the sport.
