Tottenham gives reasons for Ange Postecoglou sack

Tottenham Hotspur’s chairman, Daniel Levy, has clarified the reasoning behind the club’s surprising decision to sack manager Ange Postecoglou, even after he guided the team to victory in the Europa League.

Ange Postecoglou Europa League triumph marked Tottenham’s first major trophy in 17 years, a victory that came against Manchester United. However, the Australian was dismissed just 16 days later and replaced by former Brentford manager, Thomas Frank, a move that stunned many in the football community.

Why did Tottenham Sack Postecoglou?

In an interview on Gary Neville’s “The Overlap,” Levy explained that the decision to sack Postecoglou was a collective one made by the club’s board. He acknowledged the significance of the Europa League win, but stated that the team’s poor domestic performance ultimately led to the change.

Levy elaborated on the board’s rationale: “Ultimately, the decision sits with me, but it’s always a collective decision. We have a board of directors, but under the board, we have a group of technical staff, and they advise. Ange just won us a trophy—a European trophy, highly significant, and he’s always going to be in our history. However, we couldn’t lose sight of the fact that we finished 17th in the league, we lost 22 Premier League games, and Tottenham can’t be in that position. And so we had to take the emotion out of it and we had to give some data points as to why we decided to do what we did.”

A New Era with Thomas Frank

Looking ahead, Levy stated that the club would fully support the new manager, Thomas Frank, with player signings to help him achieve the club’s goals for the upcoming season. He added, “We will support him to the best of our ability. If you look at transfer fees, we’ve been in the top four spenders since the stadium opened, we’ve spent close to £700 million net on new players-this isn’t just about money. This is about some luck, having the right balance in the team, having the right coach-there’s a lot of things that have to come together.”

Tottenham has already begun a new era under Frank, completing the permanent signing of Mathys Tel for approximately £30 million, and acquiring Mohammed Kudus from West Ham in a £55 million deal.
