First African country to win Gold Medal at the Paris Olympic Games
South African Tatjana Smith claimed Africa’s first gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in the 100m breaststroke. Smith made a remarkable comeback to win the race with a time of 1:05.28, edging out China’s Tang Qianting, who took silver, and Ireland’s Mona McSharry, who earned bronze. This happens to be Smith’s first Olympic gold medal, following her close second-place finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
