The Federal Government of Nigeria is seeking to abolish the 6-3-3-4 education system and replacing it with 12 years of basic education plus 4 years in university/college.
However, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, made the revelation on Thursday in Abuja during the 2025 extraordinary National Council on Education meeting. The minister said the 12 years basic education system is in line with global best practices, will reduce dropout rates by removing financial and systemic barriers.

According to the Minister, merging the secondary education into basic education will also help students benefit from uninterrupted learning up to the age of 16.
He also said it would standardise the curriculum and offer early vocational training to prepare students for higher education and employment.
