Bayer Leverkusen announce Erik Ten Hag’s sack

Bayer Leverkusen has terminated the contract of former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, effective immediately.

The decision comes less than four months into his Erik Ten Hag’s with Bayer 04 Leverkusen. On Monday, September 1, 2025, the club confirmed the news on its official website, stating that the action was “harsh” but necessary.

In a statement, the Bundesliga club’s supervisory body announced the move, noting that training would be handled by the existing backroom staff on an interim basis. Club director Simon Rolfes commented, “Nobody wanted to take this step. However, the past few weeks have shown that building a new and successful team with this set-up is not feasible.”

Why Did Bayer Leverkusen terminate Erik Ten Hag’s contract?

Bayer Leverkusen’s decision to sack Erik ten Hag came after a disappointing start to the Bundesliga season, where they only managed to secure one point from a possible six.

The German club lost their first match 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim. The final straw appeared to be a stunning collapse against Werder Bremen, where Leverkusen squandered a 3-1 lead against a team with only 10 players, ultimately ending in a 3-3 draw.

Ten Hag was appointed in May on a two-year deal to take over from Xabi Alonso, who led the team to a league and cup double before leaving for Real Madrid.

This marks another setback for a former Manchester United manager, as both Ole Gunnar Solskjær and José Mourinho have also been recently sacked by their respective clubs, Besiktas and Fenerbahçe.
